About Us
With the utmost attention to both design and function, the porcelain work of Daniel Levy represents the highest quality in studio production of dinnerware, accessories and lighting. His sculptural forms of lobed squares, elongated ellipses and asymmetric scallops have been gracing homes nationwide since 1981, when he started his design studio in New York City.
Graduating with a degree in sculpture and ceramics from Alfred University, Levy's ambition was to "offer unusual, utilitarian objects that have a 'sense of the hand' in each and every piece." From the start, the combination of skilled craftsmanship, technical expertise and the use of only the finest materials sets this studio production apart.
Levy's work is made using a process called slip casting. Liquid porcelain, or slip, is cast into plaster molds of his designs to form each individual piece. Much refining and the application of color, pattern and texture takes place before the first firing of the porcelain in electric kilns to approximately 1850 degrees Fahrenheit. On cooling, additional handwork, refining and decorating is performed before a glaze is sprayed over the entire piece and it is placed in the kiln to be fired to 2350 degrees Fahrenheit. Once cooled, the final application of 22k gold or platinum is carefully hand painted and the piece is heated up one final time to 1450 degrees Fahrenheit to bond the metallic decoration to the glazed porcelain. "One needs," he says, "consummate skill, a light touch and much patience." Yet the rewards are well worth the time and effort. Subtle variations of pattern, tone and color within each piece create a vitality that separates Levy's studio craftsmanship from that of factory mass production.
From residential homes to hotels and restaurants, Levy's designs are sought out for their refinement , quality and durability. Custom color work is available for specific client needs. Design consultation and product development services are also available.
